A former energy executive in Vermont has taken a major step towards becoming the first ever transgender governor of a U.S. state.
Christine Hallquist made history on Tuesday night when she won Vermont's Democratic gubernatorial primary, becoming the first transgender gubernatorial nominee for a major political party.
While she made history on Tuesday, Hallquist faces a hard path to the governor's mansion.
"I'm proud to be a role model for others in. marginalised communities so they can rise up and be recognised", she said.
"Obviously, the long history of measuring ourselves by increasing gross domestic product is a flawed measure".
The campaign ahead in Vermont figures to be an interesting one, especially given that Hallquist has said she voted for Scott - a "nice guy", as she put it in an interview with VTDigger - in 2016.
"And that one letter takes care of 100 trolls", Hallquist said.

Hallquist will now face Vermont Governor Phil Scott, seen on April 11, 2018 in Montpelier. There's no doubt that Christine and her fellow nominees will join a strong ticket this November that will fight for our values and serve as dedicated advocates for Vermont's working families.
Christine Hallquist has defeated three other Vermont Democrats in Tuesday's primary to become the first transgender candidate to win a major political party's nomination for governor. He is expected to decline the nomination though and run again as an independent. She had the endorsement of the state party, while those supporting Nicholson outspent her by as much as $8 million.
'The whole world is looking at this as a historic moment for a transgender candidate, but that's not what Vermont looked at, ' Hallquist said. "It says something very important about Vermont, about the type of candidates we want to nominate, and the good work my team and I have done to grow the economy, make Vermont more affordable, and protect the most vulnerable".
He also endorsed a series of candidates in Wisconsin, including Bryan Steil who won the GOP primary for the House seat held by Speaker Paul Ryan and Leah Vukmir, who will face Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin in November.
In Minnesota, a key battleground state, Republicans opted for the party's county commissioner Jeff Johnson in the governor primary. "To every staff member, volunteer, donor, and voter, this win is just as much yours as it is mine", she said.
He defeated former governor Tim Pawlenty, who was hoping to regain his old job.
