Chipotle slumps 9 pct after Ohio outlet linked to food poisoning complaints

Another Chipotle Is Closed After Customers Complain of Getting Sick

The burrito chain briefly closed down one of its restaurants in Powell, Ohio Monday after a number of customers became sick.

A spokeswoman for the Delaware General Health District said the agency is in the "infancy" stages of its investigation.

The local health officials said it received illness reports from seven customers on July 29 and July 30.

Reports of illness first surfaced Sunday on the website iwaspoisoned.com, and surged into the hundreds following Business Insider's report.

"The Health District food inspection team inspected the restaurant this afternoon", Whittaker said in an email to Business Insider on Tuesday.

A Chipotle restaurant in OH reopened Tuesday as officials investigate reports of illnesses linked to the location.

The company intends to reopen the restaurant today, assuming it receives a green light from the health department.

In 2015, Chipotle's business almost dried up after an E.coli outbreak that spanned 11 states, leading the company to undertake a chain-wide safety retraining in early 2016 that closed all 2,000 of its stores for a day.

Chipotle is also using ozone treatment to help with sanitizing, and the report said that the restaurant does a daily employee health check to ensure no workers are experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or nausea.

In 2016, Chipotle was forced to shutter about 2,000 locations and carry out a food-safety training program. The company reported a 3.3 percent increase in same-store sales during this year's second quarter, with revenue increasing 8.3 percent to 1.3 billion, and an improvement in digital sales.

A customer who claims he got sick after eating at the Powell Chipotle is suing, seeking more than $250,000 in total damages from several defendants.

The latest round of negative headlines comes amid renewed optimism on Wall Street that the chain can mount a comeback under Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol, the Taco Bell veteran who took over in March.
