Charlotte Rae, 'Facts of Life' Star, Dead at 92

Charlotte Rae, best known for starring as the lovable house mother, Edna Garrett on the NBC sitcom, The Facts of Life, died Sunday in Los Angeles.

'Last Monday, I found out I have bone cancer, ' she said in a statement at the time.

In an interview with HuffPost in 2016, Rae said she never got exhausted of hearing people yell "Mrs. Garrett!" whenever they saw her. Rae revealed past year that she had bone and pancreatic cancer, but a cause of death was not immediately revealed. After six months of chemotherapy, I was cancer-free.

"I had handsome wigs", Rae said.

'Nobody ever knew. So now, at the age of 91, I have to make up my mind. I'm not in any pain right now. I'm feeling so terrific and so glad to be above ground. "I've had a great life, but I have so many wonderful things happening", she said previous year.

Friends and fans have already taken to social media to pay their respects to the fallen star, including Mindy Cohn, who played one of Rae's students on The Facts of Life. "I love life. I've had a wonderful one already." she continued. I'd like to choose life.

Born Charlotte Rae Lubotsky in Milwaukee, on April 22, 1926, she had studied drama at Northwestern University, then moved to NY where, despite early plans to be a "serious" actress, she quickly found work doing satirical sketches in Greenwich Village clubs.

As Edna Garrett, the witty housekeeper from "Diff'rent Strokes", Rae managed to steal the hearts of millions - so much, in fact, that she later earned her own spinoff.

Upon hearing the news, stars including Kathy Griffin, Audra McDonald, Eric West and co-star Todd Bridges have been quick to send their love. She played the same character heading up at an all-girls boarding school.

The actress was nominated for two Tony awards and received an an Emmy nomination in 1975 and again in 1982.

In addition to acting, Rae was an accomplished singer and dancer.

Rae appeared in a number of hit shows, including "The Partridge Family" and "The Defenders", before landing her most popular role in 1978.

The actress also appeared in 101 Dalmatians: The Series and starred alongside Hollywood actress Meryl Streep in the movie Ricki and the Flash.

Rae had survived a bout with pancreatic cancer in 2009, having caught the disease early following the deaths of her mother, uncle and sister to the disease.
