USA plans for dismantling NKorea nukes may face resistance

Thousands expected at ‘Families Belong Together’ march and rally in DC

USA intelligence agencies believe North Korea has increased production of fuel for nuclear weapons at multiple secret sites in recent months and may try to hide these while seeking concessions in nuclear talks with the United States, NBC News quoted US officials as saying on Friday.

Bolton told CBS's "Face the Nation" that Washington has devised a programme to dismantle North Korea's weapons of mass destruction - chemical, biological and nuclear - and ballistic missile programs in a year, if there is full cooperation and disclosure from Pyongyang. "I'm sure that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be discussing this with the North Koreans in the near future about really how to dismantle all of their WMD and ballistic missile programs in a year", Bolton said.

Pompeo has already visited Pyongyang twice since April to meet with Kim - the first time when he was still director of the Central Intelligence Agency - and there are discussions about a possible third trip to North Korea late next week but such a visit has not yet been confirmed.

One U.S. official with knowledge of North Korean intelligence said that "there's no evidence that they are decreasing stockpiles, or that they have stopped their production".

The talks were the first face-to-face conversations between the two countries since the summit last month between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and were held to work on implementing the agreement reached between the two leaders, the officials said.

He said the administration was well aware of North Korea's track record over the decades in dragging out negotiations with the U.S.to continue weapons development.

Evidence collected since the pair's historic meeting points to secret production facilities and the development of methods to conceal weapons creation - implying Pyongyang is aiming to hide plans to continue its nuclear program from the U.S., having made contrary, if ambiguous, commitments to Washington. "And our concern about what they're doing in the 2018 election and what President Putin said through a translator of course but what he said was there was no meddling in 2016 by the Russian state".

The North Koreans may have made a public show of destroying a main nuclear weapons test site before the summit and halted nuclear and missile tests, but "there's no evidence that they are decreasing stockpiles, or that they have stopped their production", a USA official told NBC.

On Friday, NBC News reported that U.S. intelligence officials believe the North had ramped up enrichment and is planning on keeping secret nuclear facilities hidden and operational.

Trump had showered Kim with praises, calling him a "very talented man", and made security concessions in return for very little. The president tweeted last month that there "was no longer a nuclear threat" posed by North Korea.

Siegfried Hecker, a nuclear scientist and Stanford University professor, has predicted it would take around 10 years to dismantle and clean up a substantial part of North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear site.

Trump said he would be ending joint military exercises between the USA and South Korea.

"I think they're very serious about it", the President responded. Trump had promised their talks resulted in the denuclearization of North Korea.

Xi, however, apparently tried to temper North Korea's rapid moves to get closer to the United States.
