United States border agents approached Canada fishermen in disputed waters

‘Typical American bullies’: US border patrol ‘targets Canadian fishermen’ in disputed waters amid trade war

Canada's government is looking into reports USA border patrol agents are stopping and searching Canadian boats off the coast of ME, looking for immigrants.

Global Affairs confirmed that Canada is looking into "these incidents that occurred in Canadian waters, including through engaging with USA agencies involved in the matter".

A Canadian fishermen's group said this week that over the last two weeks at least 10 fishing boats from New Brunswick have been intercepted by USA patrol agents while fishing around Machias Seal Island.

USA officials told CBC News in a statement that the border agents were in the area to "enforce immigration laws and other violations of federal law".

Rick Doucet, the fisheries minister for the Canadian province of New Brunswick, told The National Post that fishermen have spoken of "heavily armed" Border Patrol agents climbing into Canadian lobster boats and searching for "illegal immigrants".

The association declined to comment on the matter.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry said it had launched an inquiry into the incident off Machias Seal Island, which Canada insists is its territory.

He has argued that Canada and the US should submit the disagreement to arbitration at the world court.

Ties between Canada and the United States have been strained since President Donald Trump slapped tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, citing USA national security, with Trump calling Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "very dishonest" and "weak" after a spat at the G7 meeting in Quebec last month. "They're trying to get out of the USA and into Canada to claim asylum".

The stops have been inconvenient, but he doesn't feel harassed, Drouin added. He said he was "not surprised to see the Americans trying to push people around", describing them as "typical American bullies".

Relations between Canada and the United States continue to deteriorate.

Border Patrol has recently increased enforcement operations on major New England highways including a day-long roadblock on Interstate 95 near Lincoln in June and regular immigration checks of passengers at the Bangor bus station.

"There's been a bit of a misunderstanding there somewhere", Cook said Wednesday, the Star reported. "Our understanding is that this was part of a regular exercise being conducted along the US marine border".

A representative for the association did not respond to an interview request Thursday.

The Canadian flag flutters in the breeze by the lighthouse at Machias Seal Island.

"Until the matter of the boundary is resolved, we will continue to take practical steps with the U.S.to ensure that the area is well-managed". Machias Seal Island, a small low-lying island with a lighthouse manned and maintained by the Canadian government, lies about 12 miles southwest of the Canadian island of Grand Manan and 12 miles southeast of the ME village of Cutler.

The agents were enforcing "immigration laws and other violations of federal law", she said.

"Absolutely overkill", he said of the "disturbing" stops.

Tensions between Canada and the United States are now high over trade issues related to American tariffs on steel and aluminium and retaliatory Canadian levies; disputes over dairy, lumber, and wine; and the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Cook, in fact, said border agents have stopped at least 10 fishing boats over the past two weeks.
