Trump talks tougher, now says he warned Putin on meddling

"Take this to the bank, @realDonaldTrump: you turn over former U.S. Ambassador @McFaul to Putin, you can count on me and millions others to swiftly make you an ex-president", Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, a Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said in a tweet.

Sanders said "there was some conversation about" Putin's proposed exchange during Trump's summit with the Russian leader in Helsinki on Monday, where the two leaders spent about two hours together accompanied only by translators.

"He (Trump) has got his view, he's expressed his view, and I'll tell you what my view is".

The offer was "an idea they threw out", Sanders said. Trump claimed he was much tougher with Putin in their private meeting than how he has characterized it so far. Browder has said he helped expose corruption in Russian Federation.

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-South Carolina, said on Twitter that there is a "BIG discrepancy" between Trump's statement and warning by Coats.

Putin and Trump first held talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, on July 7, 2017.

At a later briefing, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the president was saying "no" to answering questions, not to the question itself.

Trump stunned the world on Monday by shying away from criticizing the Russian leader for Moscow's actions to undermine the election, sparking bipartisan fury at home and prompting calls by some USA lawmakers for tougher sanctions and other actions to punish Russia.

Among several Americans who the Russian Prosecutor's Office has said it wants to interrogate in connection with its case against Browder is the former USA ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, who on July 17 called on the State Department to "push back" against the Russian interrogation requests. Many positive things will come out of that meeting.

Trump returned to the subject of his relationship with Putin later Wednesday morning, asserting that some people would rather go to war than see him get along well with Putin.

"The president is wrong", Sen. They would rather go to war than see this.

In Tuesday's remarks at the White House, Trump said he had misspoken when he appeared to accept Putin's denials in Helsinki that Russian Federation had interfered in the 2016 election. "It's called Trump Derangement Syndrome!" the president wrote.

Trump called it an "interesting idea" and an "incredible offer" at the news conference. She went on to say, "He does believe that they would target, certainly, [the] USA election".

"Vladimir Putin has been after me for a long time even when I was ambassador", McFaul told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow on Wednesday. We're also living in a grown-up world.

In an interview with CBS News on Wednesday, Trump was asked if he agreed with the U.S. intelligence assessment that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 elections.

While Trump's position on Russian interference has shifted repeatedly in recent days, and fresh comments about North Atlantic Treaty Organisation cast doubt about the alliance's mutual defense premise, some in Trump's party signalled they had had enough with his wrecking ball diplomacy and sought to take steps to box him in.

"I was in the room as well, and I didn't take it the way you did", Sanders told Jackson. The president also criticized Germany for a natural gas pipeline deal with Russian Federation, saying it made the country "captive" to Russian Federation.
