Is footballer Mesut Ozil German or Turkish?

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil of Germany attends a training session in Singapore

Ozil, who has Turkish roots, made his decision to leave the German national team in a long post on social media.

"I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose", Ozil wrote, adding: "Certain German newspapers are using my background and photo with President Erdogan as right-wing propaganda to further their political cause".

This week, Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness also accused Ozil of "playing like s*** for years" and said the German side targeted the player as the "weak link" when the two clubs met in the Champions League.

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has finally made a comment about the decision made by his player and says that they are ready to support the German global in this time where he has been hurt by his country which he says that he has given all up until now. "We're a family and we'll offer him our full support".

The 2014 World Cup-winner said he was unfairly maligned over Germany´s group-stage exit in Russian Federation, after some media highlighted a pre-tournament photo with Turkey´s strongman President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Emery said: 'It is a personal decision from Mesut and I respect it.

Sportsmail revealed on Tuesday how chief executive Ivan Gazidis roused Arsenal staff and players on Monday by launching an impassioned defence of Ozil during a morale-boosting barbecue.

"We are like his home".

"We are going to help him feel good and show his quality with us", said Emery.

"He's training really well, he's happy to be with us and we're happy to have him back as well because he is one of the key players in our team and we need him to be fit and ready for the season".

"I prefer to give him normality in the team, he feels good with us".

Arsenal will also play Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in the tournament.
