Death toll from floods climbs to 100, Japanese government says

The swollen Kamo River is seen following heavy rain near the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto

On Sunday, the prime minister, Shinzo Abe, said efforts to locate those still stranded had turned into a "race against time".

Some Hiroshima residents compared it to a similar crisis that resulted in 2014 when heavy rain caused landslides that killed 77 people.

Some areas have been hit by more than a metre of rainfall, according to the government, while around 48,000 troops, police and firefighters have been deployed for rescue operations, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said.

The agency is also maintaining the same warning that has been issued to Gifu Prefecture.

Television footage showed a massive rescue operation, with 2,310 rescued in the city by evening, according to NHK, while search-and-rescue teams looked for others.

The number of people who have died in floods and landslides triggered by "historic" levels of torrential rain in Japan climbed to 94 on Monday, with the eventual death toll expected to exceed 100.

In this July 7, 2018 photo, a resident is rescued in a flooded area in Kurashiki, Okayama prefecture, following heavy rain.

An official said 170 patients and workers had been evacuated from the hospital and another 130 people, including 70 patients, were waiting to be rescued.

Among the missing were five people who got buried when housing collapsed, also in Hiroshima prefecture.

Evacuation orders were in place for almost 2 million people and landslide warnings were issued in many prefectures.

Four people in Ehime, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures were in critical condition after being injured in landslides, it added.

"I went to my father's family home but it was hopeless", one man said.

Emergency and weather officials warn of the possibility of additional damage caused by flooding and mudslides, although all emergency warnings issued from July 6 through 8 in 11 prefectures by the Japan Meteorological Agency alerting the significant likelihood of catastrophic disasters had been lifted as of the night of July 8.

A nursing home is reportedly flooded in Kurashiki City, although further details are still unknown. "If it were her, I wouldn't be able to stop crying".

"There are still many people missing and others in need of help, we are working against time", Abe said on Sunday morning.

Dozens have been reported killed, more are missing, as over 4 million people have been ordered to or advised to evacuate their homes.

Though the typhoon began last week, the worst of the rain hit from Thursday, when a construction worker was swept away by floodwaters in Hyogo prefecture in western Japan.

In the town of Saka, Eiichi Tsuiki opted to stay in his home, and survived only by moving to the top floor as flood waters rose, washing cars away outside.
