Conservatives Introduce Articles of Impeachment Against Rosenstein

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein MUST CREDIT Washington Post

Politico reports that they filed the articles of impeachment hours after meeting with Justice Department officials to discuss demands for documents.

Meadows, along with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio, above left) and nine other House members, introduced the articles of impeachment against Rosenstein on Wednesday evening.

While the Republicans' impeachment articles against Rosenstein-which accuse him of "knowingly hiding" information from Congress-are unlikely to succeed, they represent a significant escalation of the GOP's attack on Mueller's investigation, which President Donald Trump continues to denounce as a "witch hunt".

More here on the resolution, led by Reps.

House Speaker Paul Ryan has not signed on to the effort.

The 36-year-old freshman from Fort Walton Beach has been a leading critic of the Russian Federation probe - the "Mueller witch hunt" as he calls it - and asserts, among other things, that the government installed a spy in the Trump campaign, a conclusion disputed by Florida's top Republican in Washington, Sen.

"I am not keeping any information from Congress", Rosenstein said, pointing his finger at Jordan.

Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to discredit the Justice Department, and, by extension, the special counsel's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

"Impeachment is a punishment, it's not a remedy", House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy said shortly before Meadows introduced the resolution.

The resolution also goes directly after Rosenstein for his role in the ongoing Mueller investigation, criticizing him for refusing to produce a memo that outlines the scope of that investigation and questioning whether the investigation was started on legitimate grounds.

Democrats have argued the focus on Rosenstein is an attempt to broadly undermine the Mueller investigation. But they do not force an immediate vote on impeachment - which would have proven controversial, as many Republican lawmakers have not supported calls for Rosenstein's impeachment.

If the proposal cleared the House, it would need a two-thirds vote in the Senate for Rosenstein to lose his job. Sen. Jim Jordan of OH and Mark Meadows of North Carolina, according to a release by Jordan's office.

The last time the House actually voted to impeach an executive branch official other than a president was 1876.

"Information has been hidden, efforts have been stonewalled", Meadows said during an appearance on Fox News Wednesday night.

"Those are good arguments for ethical violations but not impeachable offenses", Napolitano said, calling the effort to impeach Rosenstein "wrong and baseless [and] embarrassing for everybody involved".
