Angelique Kerber beats Serena Williams to win first Wimbledon title

LIVE UPDATES: Williams vs Kerber in #Wimbledon ladies' final

Williams, the lowest-ranked and the third oldest player to reach a Wimbledon final, advanced to a Grand Slam final without defeating a Top 10 player en route for the eight time in her career.

As Williams said after her semi-final victory against Julia Goerges, there was nothing normal about her being in a 30th grand slam singles final 10 months after giving birth to daughter Olympia and suffering life-threatening complications.

In a stunning upset, the 7-time Wimbledon champion lost the final to Angelique Kerber of Germany in 2 sets: 6-3, 6-3.

"It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed", Williams said. She still has to wear compression sleeves and tights while playing on the court. I look forward to continuing to be out here and do what I do best.

Left-hander Kerber displayed her rock-solid defense to break Williams in the opening game - repelling a fierce baseline onslaught to induce an error at the end of a 18-stroke rally.

Speaking to reporters after Saturday's match, Williams again praised her opponent's game, saying Kerber played "unbelievable". I was really happy to get this far.

"Angelique played really well", Williams said.

The win in NY also saw her ascend to the world number one ranking, making Kerber the oldest woman to take top spot for the first time.

The 36-year-old, who last won a Grand Slam at the 2017 Australian Open, went into the final as the title favourite, even though she was playing only the fourth tournament of her post-pregnancy comeback.

Kerber and Williams faced-off in the 2016 finals, where Williams was victorious.

"I think these two weeks have really showed me that I can compete".

She was bumped up to 25th seed courtesy of her seven titles at the All England Club - the most recent in 2016 - and more than justified that decision. I can come out and be a contender to win Grand Slams.

The usual 2 p.m. start time was pushed back as the men's semifinal match between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was played to a finish having been carried over from Friday.

That would make her the first mother to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish since Evonne Goolagong in 1980.
