38,000 under evacuation as California wildfire spreads

5 Killed Including 2 Children and Their Great-Great Grandmother in California Wildfires

More than a dozen people have been reported missing, but authorities said most probably were out of touch with friends and neighbors.

"My babies are dead", Sherry Bledsoe said through tears after she and family members met Saturday with sheriff's deputies.

"What we're seeing here is an incomplete burn situation", Capt. Doug Miles said as his crew used picks, shovels and rakes to open up piles that just days ago were family homes.

Carr native, Liz Williams, described the terror she felt as she attempted to evacuate her home.

Some 3400 firefighters on the ground and in 17 helicopters were battling the fire on Saturday, which was just 5% contained as it ripped through Redding, a city of 90,000 people, in California's scenic Shasta-Trinity area.

70 year old Melody Bledsoe, and her great grand-children James and Emily were confirmed dead on Saturday. The air is thick with the smell of smoke and chemicals, and the smoldering remains are still too hot to sift through.

The fire also reportedly burned structures in Shasta, located 10 miles west of Redding, and in Keswick. Lakeport, home to about 5,000, is around 120 miles north of San Francisco.

It's now the largest of more than 20 fires burning in California. The winds that aided firefighters in keeping the flames from more populated areas were propelling it forward at a frightening rate. "This fire is moving, at times, three or four different directions".

Firefighters battling a huge wildfire in Northern California kept it from doing more damage to the city of Redding but three smaller communities were in danger as flames closed in and residents packed up to leave. On Friday an Associated Press reporter counted at least 125 burned homes.

Firefighters are battling 17 wildfires across the state, which have consumed a combined 200,000 acres in terrain stretching from Southern California to the OR border, said Jonathan Cox, battalion chief and information officer with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

By late Saturday, 38,000 people had been evacuated in Shasta County. The two fires, burning 30 miles apart, started Friday and are threatening more than 350 buildings. The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office ordered evacuations for people living in an area of Ukiah north of Highway 175.

The Carr Fire, the deadliest and most destructive of nearly 90 wildfires burning from Texas to OR, has charred almost 34,000 hectares of drought-parched vegetation since erupting last Monday.

President Donald Trump declared the fire an emergency on Saturday, authorizing federal funds for disaster relief efforts.

"We need your help", the boy said, according to Jason Decker, who is the boyfriend of another Bledsoe granddaughter.

One of those, the Cranston fire, prompted a rare closure of much of Yosemite National Park last week, while another forced mass evacuations from the mountain resort community of Idyllwild east of Los Angeles. The fire - sparked by humans - has destroyed 13,130 acres and is 29 percent contained. They include major blazes close to Yosemite National Park and in the San Jacinto mountains.

The blaze was one of almost 90 large fires burning nationally, a lot of them in the West.

So far this year, wildfires have scorched nearly 1.7 million hectares across the United States, above the 1.5 million hectare average for the same period over the last decade. Stoke had been with the Redding Fire Department since 2004.

About 12,000 firefighters were battling the fires, she said.

The family spent the night at a hotel.

Ed Bledsoe rushed home, but was turned back by police. "I know it's just stuff".

"But I still tried to get down in there and they come and stopped me and wouldn't let me get down in there". Police Chief Roger Moore said people were reportedly driving around evacuation zones and breaking down doors of houses still standing.

When they returned Friday, virtually nothing was left but fine particles of ash.
