1 dead, several injured after plane crashes in South Africa

Photographs from the scene show a damaged charter aircraft in a field.

Social media photos showed the plane's fuselage broken, dented, and charred, amid a plume of smoke.

The plane was due to be flown to the Aviodrome air museum after reportedly being renovated at the small airport.

At least twenty passengers have been pulled from the wreckage with paramedics, firefighters and police on the scene of the accident. "We have 19 injured casualties ranging from minor to critical injuries at this stage".

Meiring said there were two air ambulance helicopters on the scene.

Aviodrome wrote on Facebook that it was "hugely shocked", by the crash.

The plane, which had been expected at the Aviodrome, 'crashed in South Africa during take-off on a test flight, ' it said.

It was unclear how many people were on board the plane when it went down.

"I can only confirm that yes we do have a plane that crashed. on the Moloto Road", local government emergency services spokesman Johan Pieterse told the AFP news agency.

A spokesman for Martin Air said it had no information about the plane or the crash.

"A statement with further details will be issued tomorrow", said Kabelo Ledwaba, spokesperson of the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
