World Cup match report Uruguay v Russian Federation 25 June 2018

Uruguay's Luis Suarez and Uruguay's Martin Caceres arrive to Uruguay's official training on the eve of the group A match between Russia and Uruguay at the 2018 soccer World Cup at the Samara Arena in Samara Russia Sunday

Uruguay went up 2-0 over Russian Federation on an own-goal - the sixth of the World Cup to tie the tournament record.

Suarez tossed aside his translation headphones, then smiled broadly in defiance and finally said: "What a waste of time".

Portugal and Spain - who face Iran and already eliminated Morocco respectively later on Monday - are likely to await these sides in the knockout stages, with Uruguay's victory meaning they will face the side who finish second in Group B.

The defence was guilty of offering too much width particularly to Diego Laxalt, who was often joined by Rodrigo Bentacur, on the left wing.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia managed their first win in Russian Federation after beating Egypt 2-1 with a last-gasp victor that eclipsed Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah's 22nd minute goal.

Uruguay would have had a third soon after if not for a fine save from Akinfeev, who prevented Bentancur celebrating his 21st birthday with a goal.

"After winning the first two matches 1-0, our goal was to get another", Suarez said. But Uruguay - ranked No. 14 in the world - posed a far greater challenge to the hosts.

A total of 22 players from the Uruguayan national football squad appeared for a training session on the pitch of the 45,000-seat capacity Samara Arena amid searing summer temperatures of about 33 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit).

Oscar Tabarez's men raced into a two-goal lead with just 23 minutes gone, thanks to a smart Luis Suarez free-kick and a deflected Diego Laxalt effort that came off Cheryshev.

Uruguay scored all their goals from set pieces, something Russian Federation coach Stanislav Cherchesov said he'd planned to counteract.

However, Uruguay nearly extended its lead in the 80th minute when Cavani and Suarez raced forward with only one defender to deal with.

Cavani could have added a third just after the hour, but the Paris Saint-Germain striker elected to go down under pressure from Sergei Ignashevich rather than get a shot off, failing to fool referee Malang Diedhiou. "When they feel comfortable or at home, they score goals". He made quite the impression coming off the bench in the last match against Saudi Arabia and in keeping his place for this game Torreira backed up that performance with another impressive display.

Uruguay is making its 12th appearance at the World Cup, which it won in 1930 and 1950. Captain and goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev has long had a reputation for mistakes under pressure in high-profile games - notably fumbling a goal against South Korea four years ago - and was slow to react to both of Uruguay's first-half goals.

Cherchesov also criticised his players for not being well prepared mentally.
