What the Media Overlooked in Trey Gowdy Interview

Gowdy FBI acted properly with use of informant during 2016 campaign

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he wished he'd hired a lawyer other than Jeff Sessions to head the Justice Department, reflecting his lingering anger at his attorney general for recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe previous year.

In a Republican Party at war with itself over how to handle President Trump's attacks on the Justice Department, Rep. Trey Gowdy is straddling the front line, debunking Trump's claims that a spy infiltrated his campaign while giving him fresh ammunition against the attorney general - all in the span of about 24 hours this week.

"There are lots of really good lawyers in this country", he added.

Gowdy said he believes Trump would have picked someone else had he known Sessions would step back from that investigation.

A story in Tuesday's New York Times reported that Trump asked Sessions last March to reverse his decision, a highly unusual request that special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly looking at now as well.

Mueller is reportedly looking into the conversation - as well as Trump's repeated attacks, both public and private, on Sessions - as part of his probe into whether the president obstructed justice by colluding with Russian Federation during his campaign. Something that a 4 year old, you know, while smearing, like, chocolate on the side of a wall might think.

When asked if Trump should fire Sessions, Giuliani said no, citing Trump's "improving poll numbers". Former Trump campaign staffer George Papadopoulos told Trump, per a court filing, that he had talked with connections that could put Trump in direct contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But Gowdy admitted he found it odd that the Federal Bureau of Investigation didn't offer Trump a defensive briefing during the campaign to notify him of his three campaign officials' Russian contacts.

Gowdy explained that he, "never heard the term "spy" used", in his investigation and did not see evidence of that.

Sessions was an early supporter of Trump's campaign and the first sitting senator to endorse his candidacy for president.

Rudy Giuliani says if the president decides to fire Sessions and Rosenstein, it won't happen until after Robert Mueller completes the Russian Federation investigation. I think it's so cute, that this president thinks that attorney generals are supposed to be their personal lawyers.

At a rally Tuesday night, Trump said, "So how do you like the fact the fact they had people infiltrating our campaign?"

NY - A federal judge in Manhattan on Wednesday ordered lawyers for Michael Cohen, President Trump's longtime fixer, to complete within two weeks their review of a huge trove of documents and data that the FBI seized from him last month and that prosecutors are eager to use in their continuing investigation of Cohen. Looking ahead to fall elections, he has reinforced to Trump that the best approach now "is to keep focused on good governance in the midterms". Rosenstein played a key role in the dismissal, writing a memo that rebuked Comey over his handling of the Clinton email investigation.

"He didn't even tell the president he was going to do it", Napolitano added about Sessions' decision to recuse himself. The South Carolina congressman responded by distancing himself from Trump.
