Washington-Seoul joint military drill suspended

"S. Korea and the US have made a decision to suspend all planned activities of defensive exercise Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) that was scheduled for August following close cooperation", defense authorities announced on Tuesday.

"Consistent with President Trump's commitment and in concert with our Republic of Korea ally, the United States military has suspended all planning for this August's defensive "wargame", Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Dana W. White said in a statement.

The defense ministry of South Korea on Tuesday said it would pause its military exercises with the United States as the talks about North Korea's nuclear program continue. "The South and the United States plan to continue consultations over additional measures".

US and South Korean forces have been training together for years, and routinely rehearse everything from beach landings to an invasion from the North, or even "decapitation" strikes targeting the North Korean regime.

As specific ways toward that goal, North Korea promised complete denuclearization and the US promised security guarantees for North Korea.

North Korea failed to qualify for this year's World Cup, while the South advanced to its ninth consecutive World Cup and was set to face Sweden in the opening Group F game at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in western Russian Federation on Monday. They then were held in April.

Warming ties between North Korea and South Korea come as relations between North Korea and the United States have also improved after tension past year over the North's nuclear and missile programs.

-North Korea summit held in Singapore last week, the South Korean president said it was more successful than he had hoped.

The South Korean president also said that during the visit his country and Russian Federation were planning to sign agreements on the comprehensive development of economic cooperation.

Kang cited the recent suspension of the planned Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) military exercise as a good-faith measure aimed at "inducing North Korea's actions toward on the denuclearization track". S. Korea and the USA are expected to make a decision on whether to push ahead with other major joint military drills Key Resolve and Foal Eagle after verifying N. Korea's implementation of denuclearization.

Of the Japanese respondents, only 10.2 percent said they believe North Korea's nuclear issues will be resolved within a decade, slightly exceeding last year's figure of 7.4 percent.

Other major US-South Korea drills, such as Key Resolve and Foal Eagle, took place earlier this spring.

Commenting on the historic U.S.

South Korea and the Pentagon announced they would halt the annual Freedom Guardian military drill scheduled for August.

Trump tweeted Monday that "if President Obama.had gotten along with North Korea" and taken steps toward peace "the Fake News would have named him a national hero!"

When asked about how the global community could provide incentives for North Korea, the South Korean foreign minister said there were "a lot" of measures that could be taken prior to lifting sanctions. "I think what is left now is how completely and swiftly we implement such a wonderful agreement", he said.
