Visa announce 'disruption' preventing payments from being processed

A United Kingdom wide payment issue is affecting local businesses this afternoon.

Payment systems giant Visa said it was experiencing problems processing transactions in Europe on Friday and was trying to fix the issue.

Messages telling customers of the "disruption to service" have been sent out.

A spokesperson from Visa said: "Visa is now experiencing a service disruption".

Retailers also confirmed that payments were failing across the UK.

"It is a Visa credit and debit card issue that is affecting us intermittently".

Visa card payments are failing across the United Kingdom and Europe.

The issues reportedly arose after the Visa card network experienced severe disruptions today. "We are investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation", the company told ZDNet.

Long lines were reported at train stations on Friday and businesses lost sales because customers' cards were declined, MarketWatch reported.

The cause remains unknown and Visa offered no information of when the problem will be fixed.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
