Trump slams China, Canada and Mexico for unfair trade practices

"Mexico has the right to take measures with equivalent commercial effects", the economy ministry said in a statement explaining the tariffs.

The World Trade Organization received a complaint Tuesday from Mexico, a WTO official in Geneva said.

President Donald Trump's tariffs on aluminum and steel put a number of nations on edge.

The tariff dispute comes as Canada, Mexico and the USA try to reach an agreement to update the North American Free Trade Agreement in talks triggered a year ago by Trump's discontent with that deal. Big trade barriers against USA farmers, and other businesses, will finally be broken.

Mexico announced steep duties on Tuesday on a raft of U.S. products ranging from whiskey to apples in retaliation for the "unilateral adoption" by Washington of steel and aluminum tariffs.

Meanwhile, the White House said that the recently concluded trade negotiations in China focused on reducing the US' trade deficit by facilitating the supply of agricultural and energy products to meet China's growing consumption needs, which will help support growth and employment in the United States.

Joseph Galimberti, the president of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, says he urged the government in a cabinet meeting today to immediately impose the retaliatory tariffs on metals while it consults on other products.

Mexico will impose tariffs of 15 percent to 25 percent on U.S.

The result has been a boon for Texas and the United States, as well as Mexico and Canada.

"It is very hard to reach a negotiation when measures of this nature are suddenly taken", the minister said. Additional US tariffs aimed at quickly closing the trade gap with China could therefore mark a point of no return en route to a quickly escalating trade war.

The US is Mexico's largest trading partner, receiving about 80 per cent of the country's exports.
