South Korean President Calls For More Impromptu Talks With North Korea

South Korea's president called for more impromptu talks with his North Korean counterpart in the lead-up to the expected historic summit next month between Kim Jong Un and President Trump, according to a report Monday.

Pompeo's spokesperson said it would be the third meeting between Pompeo - who opened contacts with the isolated Pyongyang regime when he was still Central Intelligence Agency director - and General Kim. The summit was set to be held on June 12 in Singapore.

Still Trump tweeted that he believes the summit can move forward, and Kim, through the state-run news service, expressed a "fixed will" on the talks happening. What do they expect to see happen?

Trump confirmed on Twitter that Kim is coming. "But we need results and they need to be very visible before the United States creates any benefits", he said.

Trump announced that Kim Yong Chol was coming to NY for talks with Pompeo in a tweet on Tuesday in which he said he had a "great team" working on the summit.

"Everybody knows they are not going to denuclearize", one of the officials said.

Moon's rapprochement with the North has divided the South Korean government.

But conservative lawmakers accuse the governing party of using the three-page agreement, which they note is short on details, for political gain ahead of local elections in June. Sung Kim, the former USA ambassador to South Korea and current ambassador to the Philippines, led the US delegation, an official told Reuters.

The White House emphasized that it has remained in close contact with South Korean and Japanese officials as preparations for the talks continue.

Despite Kim's apparent eagerness for a summit with Trump, there are lingering doubts on whether he would ever agree to fully relinquish his nuclear weapons when he may see them as his only guarantee of survival. Trump and Abe "affirmed the shared imperative of achieving the complete and permanent dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and ballistic missile programs", the White House said in a statement.

Trump briefly scrapped the talks last week, citing "open hostility" from the North, but since then both sides have dialed down the rhetoric and the process appears to be back on track.

Trump's action was discouraging and hurtful, Moon's advisers said.

Moon told reporters that Kim said he's willing to cooperate to end confrontation and work toward peace for the sake of the successful summit with Trump. He's a former US diplomat who's been involved in negotiations with North Korea over the years. Its demands could include a reduced U.S. military role in South Korea or an end to the American nuclear "umbrella" over South Korea and Japan.

KELEMEN: That's State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert, who says there's a USA team meeting with North Koreans in the Demilitarized Zone and in Singapore, where the summit is due to take place.

"It's quite imaginable that Xi could have told Kim Jong-un, 'Hey, slow down, what's the rush, ' " says Joseph Yun, a former State Department special representative for North Korea policy with decades of experience in the China and North Korea portfolios.

"When we say 'denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, ' this could be a two-way street", Clapper said, also on "Face the Nation".

"President Moon wants the two leaders together in Singapore".

"I understand that Vice Chairman Kim Yong-chol has arrived in Beijing, will hold talks with Chinese officials at the airport and leave for the US tomorrow", a source told the media outlet on condition of anonymity.

A deal could involve a change in the South Korea-US alliance to meet North Korea's expectations of regime security, and these issues should be discussed ahead of the summit, he said. You're right. In the past, we've had these kinds of talks.

Ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk also did not say whether Seoul knew of any U.S. plans regarding Kim Yong-chol's possible visit, such as whether he and Pompeo have plans to meet.
