Raj Shah: President Donald Trump Supports Paul Ryan's Amnesty Bill

House GOP just dropped a compromise immigration bill – and it funds Trump’s border wall

One White House official who was watching the interview in a room with others said there were audible gasps when the President made the comment as staff immediately realized the potential consequences of the President's remarks. Both bills contain stringent security provisions and money to build Trump's proposed wall with Mexico, but only the compromise measure gives young immigrants who arrived in the us illegally as children a chance to ultimately become citizens.

President Trump and the White House on Friday appeared to be at odds over whether the commander-in-chief does or does not support a GOP brokered moderate compromise immigration bill.

The comments by Trump effectively end the compromise bill's chances with Republicans.

Short has led President Donald Trump's legislative agenda, which has been a mixed success during his first 18 months in office.

Both bills have stringent border security provisions.

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump will meet with Republicans on Capitol Hill Tuesday as House GOP leaders continue to tamp down a rebellion among their ranks on immigration and ahead of votes on bills created to appease centrists in their party.

The official, who was not authorized to discuss internal conversations by name, spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The bill to appease conservatives would include further reductions to legal immigration and may require all employers to check the citizenship of their employees against a federal database.

Steve Doocy, the Fox interviewer, asked about both bills, referring to one as the Goodlatte bill, sponsored by Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, and the other as a more "moderate" bill.

"I'm looking at both of them", Trump said on "Fox and Friends".

Melania Trump, who typically shies away from the political spotlight, waded into the controversial immigration debate when her office released a statement Sunday saying she "hates to see children separated from their families".

The president once again put the blame on the Democrats in a tweet on Friday afternoon, which listed the items he wants included in an immigration bill. "Go for it! WIN!"

Skittish conservative lawmakers have indicated there's little chance they would support the current plan unless Trump were to give it a full embrace.

Republicans have produced a hard-right immigration measure and a separate package negotiated by the party's battling moderates and conservatives.

His opposition would be an embarrassing and likely fatal setback. The plan scuttled a petition by Curbelo that would have forced a series of immigration votes with the support of Democrats.

Many Republicans worry that it could take Congress weeks or more to craft a bill that can pass both the House and the Senate.

He says leaders are seeking "clarity" from the White House.

"Overall, the bill would be awful for the children brought across the border by their parents - they could and would still be separated from the parents, they would have less protections than under current law, and they would be subjected to prolonged detention", said Kate Voigt, associate director of government relations at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which opposes the bill.

Congressional Republicans are racing to find legislative options to stop a White House policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the US border amid widespread condemnation of the practice.

House GOP leaders are revising their legislation amid a public outcry over the administration's "zero tolerance" approach to illegal crossings.

- Provides $25 billion for President Donald Trump's proposed border wall with Mexico, security technology, roads. Each contains other strict border security provisions, and would end a visa lottery and tighten rules that let US citizens sponsor relatives for legal status.

DACA is an Obama administration program that allows children of undocumented immigrants to remain in the US for a period of time so long as they meet certain requirements such as attending school, working or serving in the military.

The latest version of the conservative bill would extend DACA protections for renewable six-year periods. One of them was a clean effort to give the dreamers a path to citizenship that was favored to pass if it got a vote.

The moderate plan would specifically state that a minor who does not arrive at the border unaccompanied must be released to a parent or legal guardian.

Ms. Collins said she doubted the Trump administration policy would be successful in curtailing illegal immigration. "I think the answer to family separation is to not separate families while you are enforcing the law".

The zero-tolerance policy was announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in April. Despite the backlash, the president has defended the policy, which went into effect in May.

On Thursday, Sessions defended the policy during a speech in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Trump's words are causing confusion among GOP leaders, who have said Trump backs the compromise.
