Murray must overcome mental challenge after injury: Djokovic

Novak Djokovic Andy Murray Queen's

I'm expecting to be very nervous when I go back out there.

Former world number one Murray was returning from an nearly year-long lay-off due to a hip injury and looked to be in good touch after taking the first set.

Murray, who last played 342 days ago at Wimbledon 2017, still had a visible limp and sometimes looked to struggle with side-to-side movement after hip surgery in January.

He sent down 18 aces and was broken four times from 11 attempts, winning three from 11 on Murray's serve in his second consecutive match against former Wimbledon champions and top-ranked players. I mean, at the end of the match I was certainly exhausted, but it wasn't like I was completely off my feet and didn't feel like I could move anymore and stuff.

"I thought I did okay", Murray said.

I was straight into the ice bath after the match for about 12 minutes and then had a shower, did some stretching and had a massage with my physio. "I really haven't played a whole lot of tennis, so I'm happy I got out there and competed and performed respectably".

He said: "When you've not played for such a long time, naturally you're going to have doubts, and you don't know exactly how you'll feel until you start competing and playing matches again". I want to try and play well and feel good on the court, but my expectations are pretty low.

All the demons from those anxious medical updates and gruelling hours in the gym could finally be exorcised as Murray traded ground-strokes with Kyrgios from the baseline before capping the first point of his return with a cathartic forehand victor.

Also, Milos Raonic, runner-up to Roger Federer last week in Stuttgart, won his opener when Indian qualifier Yuki Bhambri retired hurt while trailing 6-1, 3-1.

"I'm a bit stiff just now".

"Kyle's been playing great", said Kyrgios.

"If he is feeling good then I don't see any reason why not", he said.

Djokovic, 31, has slipped to No. 21 in the ATP rankings and his wretched run continued with an embarrassing French Open quarter-final defeat by Italian journeyman Marco Cecchinato. Despite the Scot's gutsy and determined performance over two hours and 39 minutes on court, he remains uncertain of his plans for the grass season and says he "won't rule out" any options including the possibility of not entering Wimbledon, which begins on July 2.

Earlier, second seed Grigor Dimitrov survived a tough first-round workout against Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur to set up a second-round clash with former world number one Novak Djokovic.
