Microsoft Agrees To Acquire GitHub For $7.5 Billion

Microsoft reportedly had talks about acquiring GitHub

According to Microsoft's news release, the site boasts more than 28 million users, who share their code and tinker with that of others in software development.

It's free to use GitHub for open-source projects, but some developers and businesses pay a monthly fee to access private code repositories and other services.

Microsoft has been a developer-focused company from the very first product we created to the platforms and tools we offer today.

GitHub apparently preferred selling the company to going public, and Microsoft's newest CEO Satya Nadella impressed GitHub executives. It now has more than 28 million users and hosts over 85 million code archives known as repositories. The Git-repository hosting service, which has its headquarters in San Francisco, was last valued in 2015, with an estimate of US$2 billion being placed on the company.

"Most importantly, we recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, according to The Verge. While Microsoft appears to be embracing the open-source community these days, it wasn't very long ago that it viewed open-source development as a threat to its core business model.

Outgoing CEO Wanstrath, who will now become a technical fellow working on software initiatives, welcomed the news and said he was "thrilled" to be working with the tech behemoth.

The companies have reportedly had several discussions about partnership in recent years, but those close to GitHub's decision told media outlets that talks have grown increasingly more serious.

That said, GitHub is more significant than Microsoft, and its unlikely its objective will be modified once the Redmond-based giant takes over day-to-day operations. But a US$5 billion price tag would certainly make GitHub one of the larger purchases in Microsoft's portfolio. "Developers will continue to be able to use the programming languages, tools and operating systems of their choice for their projects-and will still be able to deploy their code on any cloud and any device". Potential synergies also exist between GitHub and Microsoft's hybrid cloud platform Azure, as well as LinkedIn. Others struck a more serious tone, as they anxious that the deal might mean GitHub becomes closed off to anything but Microsoft technologies.

We both believe GitHub needs to remain an open platform for all developers.
