'Man of Peace': Norwegian MPs Nominate Trump for Nobel Prize

Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump

Four U.S. presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize: Barack Obama in 2009, Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and Jimmy Carter in 2002.

Some 216 individuals and 114 organisations have been nominated for the 2018 prize, which will be announced in October.

Previously, tramp was nominated for the Nobel peace prize for efforts on the nuclear program of the DPRK. But talk of the peace prize for the USA president has been steadily gaining traction in America's conservative circles ever since Mr Trump first expressed his willingness to engage directly with the ruler of the hermit kingdom earlier this year.

Mr Trump's Norwegian nominations come after United Kingdom bookmakers slashed the odds of him winning after his summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

The nomination is past the deadline for the next Prize, so his name is submitted for the 2019 awards.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee's vice-chair, Henrik Syse, wrote in a blog in December, 2016, that: "President-elect Donald Trump has, with his rhetoric, lowered the threshold for moral decency so far it is downright scary".

Despite the fact that the Norwegian Nobel Committee is appointed by the Parliament, its decisions are independent.

Amundsen nominated Trump along with his fellow Progress Party colleague Christian Tybring-Gjedde.

But while a Nobel award would cause consternation among Trump's critics, he also has some high-profile supporters. The remaining two committee members appear not to have written publicly about Trump.

Nominations for this year's prize also formally closed on February 1, before the summit was agreed.

Any member of a national assembly may submit nominations for consideration. Several point out that the four-point communiqué issued at the end of the meeting contained only provisions North Korea had already agreed to in summits dating back to the 1990s.
