Lions, tigers, jaguar and bear escape zoo in Germany

Lions and tigers break out of zoo cages in western Germany

A spokesman for the district of Bitburg-Pruem, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, said earlier in the day that two lions, two tigers and a jaguar were on the loose. Area residents were advised to stay in their houses, close their doors and windows and keep an eye out for the missing animals.

The Eifel Zoo in Luenebach is located in the west of Rhineland-Palatinate, about 50 kilometres north of Trier.

The zoo is home to about 400 animals, many of which are big cats.

Heavy rainstorms overnight had sparked flash floods.

Part of a local motorway had been blocked off due to high waters, and a train was derailed although no injuries were reported.

According to the zoo's website, it is owned by the Wallpott family and has three permanent employees.

Unconfirmed reports say the animals have now been captured after being found in the zoo's grounds with the help of a drone.

Friday's escape comes two years after two lions broke out of their cages at a zoo in Leipzig in eastern Germany.

One of the lions was shot dead while the other was eventually brought back into captivity.

The bear escaped from the 30-hectare zoo grounds into the rolling hills of the Eifel region and had to be shot, Raskopp said.
