Lauda and Hamilton critical of Vettel penalty

Hamilton gets new engine but Mercedes won't say which one

Lewis Hamilton reclaimed the lead in the Formula One world championship with a comfortable victory Sunday in the French Grand Prix's return to the calendar.

"So I guess the rule is causing a collision and that's what I did because I lost the auto".

After all the commotion, polesitter Hamilton was leading with Verstappen second, Ricciardo fourth, Vettel 11th and Bottas 13th.

Vettel needed a new front wing for his Ferrari and had to work his way from the back of the pack to settle for a fifth-place finish behind Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

After banging wheels with Hamilton in Azerbaijan previous year, crashing out at Singapore, tangling with Hamilton and Verstappen at the start in Mexico, and running off the road in Baku in April, Vettel was left to rue another costly error.

The four-time world champion clocked a best lap in one minute and 30.029 seconds to grab the 75th pole position of his career ahead of Bottas, giving himself a ideal chance to regain the initiative in the title race in Sunday's race.

Vettel was given a five-second penalty for causing the incident and recovered to finish the race fifth, and while he accepted it was his error, he said there was nothing else he could do in that position. "Then I ended up with nowhere to go", Vettel said.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who leads Hamilton by a point in the drivers standings, will set off from the second row after coming in third quickest in qualifying at Le Castellet circuit on Saturday.

But while the battle should, at least on paper, be between Vettel and Hamilton, Bottas is an outside favourite. "You can see how close it is between us all. We have a good vehicle".

"We were going kind of side by side to the braking zone and I went for the outside", said the Finn.

"The new engine feels clean and fresh", said Hamilton. "We're all on the edge, we're fighting for the world championships, we're not pootling around, we're out there putting our lives on the line, we're out there putting the cars as far beyond the edge as we can in the safest manner".

Carlos Sainz came home eighth for Renault, to the delight of the crowd, ahead of team-mate Nico Hulkenberg and Charles Leclerc, who secured a point for Sauber with another impressive performance.

Driving conditions were optimal at the 5.8-kilometer (3.6-mile) circuit situated just inland from the Cote d' Azur.

Sunday's victory was the 65th of Hamilton's F1 career but the Briton's first in France, which last hosted a race in 2008.

"I was three tenths down in the first two sectors", he explained.
