House leadership postpones vote on large-scale amnesty bill

Mark Meadows to FBN: I am not running for House Speaker

"What is the objective of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct".

In Friday morning tweets, Trump says Democrats have "no intention" of supplying the votes necessary to pass legislation on the issue and says "We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave!" The parents were told they would be separated from their children and voluntarily crossed back to Mexico after trying to seek asylum in the United States.

Apart from the demerits of the Ryan "compromise", there is also the likelihood, acknowledged by Trump in a tweet, that the Senate won't pass this legislation.

The compromise bill goes a step further, by allowing children to be detained with their parents, and mandating that DHS house families who are going through criminal proceedings for first-time border crossings rather than turn them over to the Justice Department, as is current policy, CBS News' Rebecca Kaplan reports.

Amodei was one of 23 Republicans who signed the discharge petition, which fell two votes short of the number needed to force a vote. His order seemed to stem some of the urgency for Congress to act.

Trump has tweeted that "Republicans should stop wasting their time" on the issue until after the elections, when he thinks the GOP will gain strength in Congress.

Trump himself travelled to Capitol Hill Tuesday to make the case that Congress should pass either of two bills that have been under consideration, and on Wednesday postponed the annual Congressional Picnic that had been scheduled for Thursday at the White House so that lawmakers could work to pass them.

But as with the case of the travel ban, the reality of a vastly complicated bureaucratic system is colliding head-on with Trump's shoot-from-the-hip use of executive power.

Earlier in the day, Speaker Paul Ryan had appeared resigned to defeat, instead holding out hope that the compromise negotiated among the Republican House majority could sow the seeds for an eventual resolution. The Department of Homeland Security, and Sessions, later said the policy was not intended for deterrence.

Immigrant families in the spotlight

Thursday night's meeting was held in the White House Situation Room and lasted at least 90 minutes, according to three people briefed on the discussion who described it on the condition of anonymity.

"We are told 36 times in the Torah, that 'you shall not wrong or oppress a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt, '" said Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz, of Temple B'nai Abraham in Livingston. "It won't be easy".

Trump lashed out Friday, saying the U.S. That bill would provide $25 billion for Trump's border wall and set new limits on family visas in favor of merit-based entry - but also create a path to citizenship for young "Dreamers".

The House bill is a compromise between the conservative and moderate factions that dragged on for several weeks. It is expected to fail.

The administration began drawing up plans to house as many as 20,000 migrants on USA military bases, though officials gave conflicting explanations as to whether those beds would be for children or for families. "We'll not rest until our border is secure, our citizens are safe and we end this immigration crisis once and for all..." But the judiciary has ruled that the government can not do that for longer than 20 days.

It is unclear if or when more children separated from their families at the border will arrive in Chicago.

The dramatic audio, first reported by ProPublica and later provided to The Associated Press, roiled the national debate over the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" approach to border crossings.

Meanwhile, the administration continued to scramble to modify its "zero tolerance" policy that was announced at the border in April and has led to the separation of more than 2,000 families. Members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus have expressed concerns with the bill as have members of the moderate wing. It made steeper cuts to legal immigration programs and had little support even among Republican members.
