Has Sloane Stephens taken American tennis' baton from Serena Williams?

Serena Williams Wimbledon

The American, now ranked 181st, was unseeded at the French Open.

Serena Williams will likely make her latest comeback at Wimbledon. "I've played tennis for over 30 years, so I'm so used to [being] incredibly fit", she said.

"I think and I hope - and it should be under review - to change these rules". These pregnancies do tend to come later in their careers, but they seem able to get back to championship-winning form and quickly.

ESPN notes, "Before her pregnancy, Williams was ranked No. 1; she is now ranked No. 183, and did not receive a seed at Roland Garros". She's listed at +600 on the odds sheet, but she's playing well this year (having won the Birmingham Classic just last weekend) and is maybe a safer pick than some of the other favorites.

"But they never took into account women that left No. 1" due to pregnancy, Williams added.

In normal circumstances, there would be no changes in seeding from the WTA rankings but the Wimbledon rulebook offers an exception "where, in the opinion of the committee, a change is necessary to produce a balanced draw".

It's well worth noting that McEnroe was fairly measured in his appraisal of where Serena Williams should land with a preferential seeding, saying, "Somewhere between one and 10 - one and 16 at the worst".

Serena Williams is one of the most dominant players in the history of tennis. But Williams has made only a tentative return to action following complications during daughter Alexis Olympia's birth. That's me coming from a different viewpoint'. "I don't think I would've won if I was not pregnant", she said.

'Forget the fact that she has won 23 majors and what she brings to the table.

As for the argument that seeding Williams might be unfair to the player edged out of the top 32, McEnroe responded: "What's her name?" She had a deep run at the French Open, but given that clay is her favorite surface and given her struggles on faster surfaces this year, I'd give Muguruza a pass. "I think there should definitely be help if you want to do that, just like in a job that you have, you know, an office job".
