Game Over: Apple, Samsung Settle Epic Legal Battle

This is what smartphones looked like before the iPhone

Apple and Samsung have finally settled settled a seven year patent dispute over allegations that Samsung copied the design of the Apple iPhone.

The Court filing also states that the "remaining claims and counterclaims in this action are hereby dismissed with prejudice", and another case can not be filed on the same claim.

Apple hasn't commented on the settlement, but is referring media outlets back to its comments in May.

Apple alleged Samsung's Nexus Android phones infringed on Apple's patents, trademarks, user interface and style. Terms of the settlement were not made public, according to Reuters.

The document doesn't specify the terms of the settlement, so it's unclear if Samsung agreed to pay the $539 million it was supposed to, or if a different agreement was reached.

It's been a long road for Apple and Samsung's legal dispute over accusations that the latter copied ideas from the iPhone back in 2011. "It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple".

"This case has always been about more than money", the statement read.

After appeals and trials, this $1.05 billion amount was reduced, and Samsung agreed to pay some damages. In August 2012, Apple won the initial jury verdict and was awarded $1.05 billion, but Koh ordered a retrial after deciding the jury added an extra $399 million for violation of additional trademarks that weren't included in the trial.

"Dang! I figured the kids I've been raising since this thing started would have time to grow up, go to law school and work on this case someday."
It was ordered to pay the U.S. tech giant more than $1 billion for infringing on three of Apple's design patents related to mobile devices - the quick links to phone numbers, the slide-to-unlock feature and the auto-correct function.
