Don't wave the white flag, Trump tells Harley-Davidson

Harley-Davidson To Move More Production Oversees Amid US-EU Trade Tensions

"Harley-Davidson will not raise its manufacturer's suggested retail prices or wholesale prices to its dealers to cover the costs of the retaliatory tariffs", the company stated in the SEC notice, adding, "To address the substantial cost of this tariff burden long-term, Harley-Davidson will be implementing a plan to shift production of motorcycles for European Union destinations from the U.S.to its worldwide facilities to avoid the tariff burden".

In his latest Twitter rant targeting the iconic maker of motorcycles, Mr Trump warned: "If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit!"

In a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said their tariffs increased from 6% to 31%, which would cost customers approximately $2,200 per average motorcycle built in the United States and sent to Europe.

A Harley-Davidson spokesman said the company had nothing to say in response to Trump's tweet beyond its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He could be referring to the tariffs he is attempting to unilaterally impose on foreign imports.

Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, a vocal critic of the president's previous tariffs announcements, jumped to Harley's defense after its announcement Monday.

Harley-Davidson on Monday said it would shift production outside the United States after the European Union - in retaliation for Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum - imposed penalties on American motorcycles.

"I fought hard for them and ultimately they will not pay tariffs selling into the European Union, which has hurt us badly on trade, down $151 Billion", Trump continued. "Hence, they were just using Tariffs/Trade War as an excuse", Trump said on Twitter.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders downplayed the announcement earlier Monday, saying Trump's "trade and economic policies have been a huge benefit to the American economy". Harley-Davidson declined interview requests Monday but said in prepared remarks that the company "maintains a strong commitment to US -based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally".

Harley Davison will shift production to worldwide facilities, saying the move will take nine to eighteen months. The levy on Harley-Davidson bikes has increased to 31% from 6%, the company said.

Moving production overseas is expected to require nine to 18 months, meaning that in the near term the company will absorb the costs of higher European Union tariffs.

In a subsequent tweet, Trump said the U.S.is managing to get other countries to lower existing tariffs and barriers that he said have been in place for years trough bad deals.

Shifting the production overseas could take up to 18 months, the motorcycle maker said. Martinez added. "Does Harley even understand what "Made in America" means?"

Trump recently imposed steep tariffs on aluminum and steel imported from Canada, Mexico and Europe in his bid to level the trade playing field and reduce trade deficits between the US and its trade partners. "They must play fair or they will pay tariffs!"

Wisconsin's elected leaders said the decision pointed to the need to expand markets. "The best way to help American workers, consumers, and manufacturers is to open new markets for them, not to raise barriers to our own market".
