Clinical Colombia send sorry Poland packing with 3-0 victory

Cedella Roman 19 was jogging on a Canadian beach when she'accidentally crossed over into the United States whereupon she was detained

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman said his team still needed to get better despite reviving their World Cup campaign with a 3-0 demolition of Poland at the Kazan Arena on Sunday.

Poland have been eliminated from the World Cup, beaten 3-0 by Colombia in Kazan.

- Quintero became the first Colombian player to score in two World Cup tournaments (2014 and '18) in the opening loss to Japan.

Defender Yerry Mina opened the scoring in the 40th minute with captain Radamel Falcao and winger Juan Cuadrado sealing a deserved victory with two goals in five minutes as the desperate Poles chased the game in the last quarter.

Colombia can not afford to dwell on regrets from its loss to Japan in their World Cup opener when facing Poland in a crucial second Group H match, midfielder Abel Aguilar says.

Colombia, who reached the quarter-finals for the first time in Brazil four years ago before bowing out to the hosts, are in a similar situation after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Japan - they were forced to play with 10 men for nearly the entire game. "But we treat Colombia as a whole team, even if they have such a great player. I want, and we want, to share it with him", he said.

"I was alone, we fought, I fought, I did everything I could, but fighting is not enough to win World Cup matches, you also have to have quality and we had too little of that".

Quintero proved the architect with a sublime through-ball, allowing Falcao to break free and prod a clever finish into the bottom corner. "I think the fact that he scored was very important, not just for today but for the matches to come".

Colombia resumed in positive fashion, Cuadrado holding up well to set up Falcao for a first-time drive that sailed over Szczesny's crossbar. Juan Fernando Quintero's inch-perfect pass played in the striker, who steered a low shot past Wojciech Szczesny with the outside of his right foot.

It evoked memories of the chilling murder of former Colombia player Andres Escobar, who was killed after his own goal led to defeat to the United States in the 1994 World Cup and Colombia's elimination from the tournament.

Poland faces Japan, and Colombia plays against Senegal, on Thursday.

And with Lewandowski and his team-mates hurting, ruthless World Cup fans have unearthed an old tweet the Poland captain sent to Rodriguez a year ago.

Poland played well for 15 minutes but then faded.
