CEO Tim Cook Rejects Report Apple May Abuse Facebook Data

An artist compiled various rumors about the 2018 iPhone into images including this one

After recent news that Facebook provided "deep access" to smart device makers to access user data, and that the company also failed to report this information to consumers or the USA government, many are publicly voicing their displeasure with the actions of the social network company.

Part of the reason iOS 12 is able to support phones as old as the iPhone 5s is because of a software adjustment that ramps the phone up to its full performance potential as needed (e.g. when you're loading an app) and then brings it back down more quickly to preserve battery. When people visit sites, the characteristics of their device can be used by advertisers to create a "fingerprint" to track them.

At last year's conference, Apple demonstrated the HomePod speaker, monoblock iMac Pro and a pair of the new iPad Pro. Craig Federighi, senior VP of software engineering at Apple, told a standing-room pack with almost 6,000 software developers at the Worldwide Developers Conference of Apple in Silicon Valley, stated that as the "like" buttons and the "comment" fields on Facebook can be utilized to track the subscriber, so this year Apple is shutting those down. "So this year, we're shutting that down".

Cook told NPR that Apple's partnership with Facebook just let users share on the social network directly from their device's operating system.

In 2017, Apple added a "Do Not Track", feature to the macOS system, adding a request to the website not to track you, "but it's up to the website to honor this request", Apple says on its website.

Facebook's Like button is one of the more notorious trackers. From here, users able to choose to allow it or not.

According to the iOS announcement, Apple is adding enhancements to prevent tracking of users.

Mark Zuckerberg's hearings on the Cambridge Analytica privacy breach in April raised questions on how Facebook tracks people on the Web, even if they're not logged into the network or a member.

At the time, Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center called the disclosures "a giant surveillance warning label".

The features follow a feature Apple built into Safari past year that limits the ability of data brokers to track Safari users' online movements across different sites as they surfed the web.

"These partners signed agreements that prevented people's Facebook information from being used for any other objective than to recreate Facebook-like experiences", Ime Archibong, Facebook's vice president of product partnerships, said in the post.

Mac OS Mojave will also lock down your camera and microphone, similar to iOS.

At its annual developer conference on Monday, Apple rolled out new features that seem like pointed barbs at Facebook.
