Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade's deaths are part of a growing problem in the US

CDC: US suicide rates have climbed dramatically

Suicide rates climbed 25.4 percent nationwide from 1999 to 2016, according to a report released June 7 by the CDC.

More than half of the people who died didn't have a known mental health issue at the time of death, according to the CDC study.

"These findings are disturbing", Schuchat says. Deborah Stone, a behavioral scientist at the CDC and the lead author of the new study said, "Suicide in this country really is a problem that is impacted by so many factors".

Some factors that contribute to suicide are relationship problems, physical health problems, loss of housing, and a crisis from the past.

"We need to have people understand that just because there was a high profile death by suicide it doesn't mean it has to be your outcome, too", he said.

Death rates from suicide jumped in 2008 with the financial devastation many experienced during the economic recession, and have increased to more than one death per day in CT.

Experts have said that researchers on suicide can garner a lot of information from this study and help develop strategies for prevention.

The funding from federal sources helps, though much of it is aimed at teenagers and adolescents while funds for suicide prevention specifically in older adults - who have been dying by suicide at increasing rates since the 1990s - are rare. "Beginning a conversation, helping keep them safe, helping them connect and then follow up with them", she said.

"Death by suicide is the ultimate Stage 4 event in the progression of many mental health conditions, whether or not they have ever been recognized and labeled".

Overall, the most common method used was firearms.

"If you're anxious about a loved one, how do you begin that conversation?"

But, Duarte said, they haven't stopped the numbers of suicide deaths from going up, alongside rates of partipation in risk behaviors such as drug use. Montana saw 29 suicides for every 100,000 people while District of Columbia saw sever for every 100,000.

"To be honest I didn't even know what suicide was when I was in middle school", said Monroe.

Bourdain's death was caused by suicide.

"It's just one of those things you can't hardly believe", said Culbreath. The trend has begun to close a longstanding gender gap in suicide, in which men were far more likely to take their own lives.

All states except Nevada experienced an increase; although Nevada showed a 1% decrease in suicide, the state's suicide rate was still high, ranging between 21 and 23 suicides for every 100,000 people through the years studied, the researchers say. She and her colleagues recently analyzed suicides from 1999 to 2016.
