‘All systems go’ for Trump-Kim summit, Singapore diplomat says

Kim Jong Un impersonator held by Singapore immigration

"Kim Jong Un is revered as a god-like being in his country, while outside the North, he's been subject to hostility because of the way his regime is run, and that's enough to always cause safety concerns for his officials", said Chae.

"The fact that we have been chosen as the site of the meeting, we did not ask for it.it says something about Singapore relations with the parties. and our standing in the worldwide community", he added.

The president said Saturday he has "a clear objective" for the "mission of peace" and nuclear summit in Singapore - to convince Kim to completely abandon North Korea's arsenal of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Trump also wants to emerge from the negotiations looking like the master deal maker he claims to be, solving a tough problem his predecessors could not.

The Kim sit-down comes as Trump's combative style of diplomacy has been on stark display this weekend in Canada during the annual Group of Seven summit. And he may have achieved this under false pretences.

But after North Korea repeated its eagerness to meet, the summit was back on.

The brief appearance of Kim's IL-62M personal jet on the flight tracking website, however, came Sunday despite mounting speculation that he might instead use an Air China Boeing 747 to make the flight to Singapore.

When asked what he was doing to prepare, the president said he doesn't have to "prepare very much".

He refuted suggestions he had already given Kim a win by agreeing to even have the meeting.

Still, the gulf between the US and North Korea remains vast.

Another North Korea expert from the Bush administration, Victor Cha, noted that only Trump has raised troop presence as a possible negotiating point.

Kristof's take? We're more likely to see agreements to freeze nuclear development in North Korea, with vague promises to relinquish nuclear weapons a long time in the future.

Joseph Yun, the top US diplomat on North Korea policy until March, recently outlined how far apart the two sides are.

Seoul quoted the North Korean leader as saying during his recent summit with his South Korean counterpart, "If we maintain frequent meetings and build trust with the United States and receive promises for an end to the war and a non-aggression treaty, then why would we need to live in difficulty by keeping our nuclear weapons?"

At the same time, the U.S. president thinks that Kim Jong-un can make North Korea great.

"So it's one-time, it's a one-time shot, and I think it's going to work out very well".

In two days, Donald Trump will grant North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un a long-held wish: an audience with an American president.

Washington is demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization (CVID) of the North, while Pyongyang has so far only made public pledges of its commitment to the denuclearization of the peninsula - a term open to wide interpretation - while seeking security guarantees. While the U.S. has not lifted any of its sanctions, Trump has said he will not add any new sanctions before the summit.

When he previously appeared at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea with the same Donald Trump lookalike, he was escorted out by security after waving and dancing in front of North Korea´s cheerleaders.
