World Health Organization launches plans to eliminate trans fats from global food supply

WHO Calls for Worldwide Elimination of Trans Fats by 2023

The global body now wants it eliminated from the global food supply, citing the rising cases of heart-related diseases.

WTO said Monday that trans fats used in fried foods, baked foods, among others may lead to more than 500,000 cardiovascular and heart disease deaths per year. Reportedly, some of the countries across the globe have banned the use of partially hydrogenated oils, which are the key sources of trans-fats.

Due to its longer shelf life and other characteristics, hydrogenated oil is commonly added to baked goods, snacks, deep-fried fare and cold pastries, and dough, like frozen pizza and cinnamon rolls. World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a separate statement as well.

"Implementing the six strategic actions in the replace package will help achieve the elimination of trans fat, and represent a major victory in the global fight against cardiovascular disease", he said.

"Why should our children have such an unsafe ingredient in their foods" asked Tedros.

"The world is now embarking on the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition, using it as a driver for improved access to healthy food and nutrition".

"We are asking food manufacturers in our industry to act quickly and we are ready to support effective measures to achieve the elimination of industrially produced trans fatty acids and ensure the equality of all in this area", he said. says Rocco Rinaldi, Secretary General of the International Food and Beverage Alliance.

The World Health Organization announced on Monday that it is mounting a campaign to have risky man-made trans fats disqualified from use in all food products.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, Denmark's cardiovascular disease deaths declined dramatically three years after policy was enforced.

Several countries, particularly the richer ones, have already limited or are on the verge of eliminating trans fats in packaged foods.

Recently WHO floated a scheme called REPLACE that will offer instruction for all countries on how to eliminate artificial trans fats from their foods, probably causing global suppression.

GPW13 is on the agenda of the 71st World Health Assembly that will be held in Geneva on 21 - 26 May 2018.

Many manufacturers cut back, and studies showed trans fat levels in the blood of middle-aged United States adults fell by almost 60% by the end of the decade.

"It is important to remember that, even with the actions by FDA and announcement by World Health Organization, there will always be naturally occurring trans fat in the diets that include meat and dairy products such as milk, butter and yogurt", the Grocery Manufacturer Association said.

The trans fats have recently been identified as the cause of heart attacks and strokes, an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes and infertility in women.
