Wells Fargo featured groups: Tiger Woods paired with Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka

PGA | Must-Haves | Wells Fargo Championship

James Hahn won the Wells Fargo the last time that Quail Hollow played host in 2016.

The Wells Fargo Championship has been around since 2003, back when it was called the Wachovia Championship.

Brian Harman is the defending champion, having taken last year's renewal at nearby Eagle Point, but in a way Thomas feels more like the holder having won on this course in August, when arguably the best player in the world over the last year claimed his first Major by lifting the Wanamaker Trophy.

"I was like, 'Why am I playing courses the same when I'm playing my best versus when I'm not playing well?'" Thomas said.

Peterson had a two-shot lead over five players, from Quail Hollow member Johnson Wagner to PGA Tour rookie Keith Mitchell.

"I've had a nice year, a bunch of top 10s", Harman said. Tons of trees were removed to reduce shadows on the greens. That's only the beginning of the Green Mile - which is one of the toughest closing stretches of holes on Tour.

The Wells Fargo Championship is the only regular PGA Tour event where Tiger Woods has missed the 36-hole cut twice. Luckily for this week's field, the course will return to normal tournament conditions this week. Of course, that's where we come in. Checked their stats. Crunched our numbers into our model. Living around the top 10 is something Tiger did for a long time.

Phil Mickelson arrives at Quail Hollow feeling that he has a point to prove. He opened at 22-1 before falling down the Wells Fargo Championship odds board slightly. So yeah - Lefty seems like he enjoys playing in Charlotte.

Shortly after, Thomas made sure that the soon-to-be-newlyweds got tickets to the tournament. He may not be the most popular victor of a major championship but few would argue that he is the most determined. 'Twas a insane time for Phil.

Although Quail Hollow had to endure a few more slings and arrows than officials are accustomed to, the '17 PGA did provide valuable feedback for future events. It's safe to say that he has regained that focus this season, especially when it comes to his putting. "He always had chances to win tournaments, and if he didn't, he was always around, always on that first page of the leaderboard". Making his tournament debut, Lovelady had a great ball-striking day to set up seven birdies. His stats certainly suggest it... And Phil Mickelson - the 54-hole co-leader with Nick Watney - had a one-shot lead with three holes to play before back-to-back bogeys. He's also barely in the top 200 in total driving efficiency at 376. He's longer than the average Tour player (300.6 yards/46th), and a solid par 3 player (33rd in scoring average). But if he does miss the green, he is 1st in Scrambling and 2nd in Sand Saves.

"We learned a lot about Quail Hollow and that it's a better golf course when it's over-seeded and the rough is shorter than it is with Bermuda and deep, nasty rough", Wagner said. Tommy Fleetwood at $9,000 checks all three boxes when looking through the key statistics.

If you're wondering what you can expect from Tiger this week, that exact issue was discussed in this week's FORE Questions. In solo events, Rory has made his last ten cuts - his most consistent run in a decade - registering three top-20s along the way including fifth at the Valspar.

It was a dramatic victory at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., which hosted the event previous year, that was capped off by a 28-footer for birdie at the 72nd hole and propelled Harman to his first start at the Tour Championship. He birdied 3 of his first 6 holes to get to 3 under and grabbed the early lead. "I don't care about the US Open or the Open Championship, it's the biggest tournament in the world".

Elsewhere, Kevin Kisner (40/1) has two top-10 finishes in his last two appearances at the course, while in-form Ryan Moore catches the eye out at 50/1. He has eight top-10s at this event (most recently 2015) and has made 14 straight cuts here. It nearly got even better. Well, under-the-radar is exactly the type of position this young Brit on-the-rise loves to be in.
