U.S. in ‘productive talks’ about reinstating June North Korea summit

Donald Trump says US North Korea summit ‘could’ happen on 12 June

Trump told reporters on his way to board the presidential helicopter that United States officials are in talks with North Korea after the country's "very nice statement" on Friday. "If North Korea is serious, then we look forward hearing from them at the highest levels".

Third, Trump must explain to Kim that there will be no letup in planned U.S.

"We even inwardly hoped that what is called "Trump formula" would help clear both sides of their worries and comply with the requirements of our side and would be a wise way of substantial effect for settling the issue", he said, without elaborating.

"Now that the talks broke down, North Korea will have to take action to bring America back to the table", said Kim Cheol-hong, an office worker outside on a coffee break.

Since accepting Kim's invitation in March, Trump has continually heightened anticipation for the summit, predicting a "very big success" and entertaining South Korean President Moon Jae-in's remark that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.

Was Donald Trump flattered into reversing his decision to cancel summit with Kim Jong-un?

Asked Friday if the North Koreans were playing games with their communications, Mr Trump responded: "Everybody plays games".

While the White House has clearly stated that North Korea must take significant steps toward complete denuclearization in a limited time frame before any sanctions can be relaxed or significant rewards given, Pyongyang has called for a "synchronous" process of disarmament in which gradual steps towards denuclearization are met with concurrent USA economic and security concessions.

On Saturday, South Korea, which had brokered the remarkable detente between Washington and Pyongyang, cautiously welcomed Trump's latest comments. In fact, Kim Kye-gwan released a statement last night in response to the cancellation, saying North Korea was ready to meet with the United States "at any time". Indeed, the diplomatic fallout from a collapse in talks could be so severe that Trump may feel politically he may have no choice but to strike with all the fallout-geopolitically as well as atomically-that comes with it.

"It's a game between Trump and KJU to get the upper hand before someone gets kicked off the island".

The White House has repeatedly offered mixed messages. Trump cited North Korea's "tremendous anger and open hostility" as his reason for canceling the summit. He added that his country's "objective and resolve to do our best for the sake of peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and all humankind remain unchanged". "We'll see what happens - it could even be the 12th".

However, the North quickly became angered by comments from senior USA officials who made comparisons with Libya.

Trump's letter caught allies by surprise.

Since January, Kim has taken a radically softer approach to foreign affairs, sending his sister to the Olympics in South Korea, meeting with his South Korean counterpart on their shared border and exploding parts of his nuclear testing site Thursday in an apparent sign of good faith.

Part of staying on those countries' good sides will include continuing to refrain from missile tests, which many anxious North Korea would resume with the summit cancelled, said Jenny Town, managing editor of 38 North.

President Moon Jae-in had to scramble his national security team when news of Trump's decision first reached Seoul late Thursday evening as he called Washington's u-turn "shocking and very regrettable".

"Whether it was to maintain good will with the South, or whether it was the case that they realized, "Our great leader wants to move ahead with summit, and perhaps our language put that in jeopardy" is unclear, he said. There, former leader Colonel Gaddafi gave up his nascent nuclear programme only for him to be killed by Western-backed rebels a few years later.
