Subtropical Storm Alberto Expected To Make Landfall Monday

Flood watch in effect for South Florida as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads north

In contrast to a tropical storm or hurricane, where the strongest winds are at the center, a subtropical storm can have the most powerful winds far from the core.

The new location closer to Florida also implies that the center of the storm may come close enough to the west coast of the state, including the Tampa Bay area, to cause risky winds and some storm surge.

The National Weather Service's office in Tampa said in a briefing Saturday that winds from Alberto would increase late Saturday night, persisting during the day Sunday, then diminish later Sunday night.

Subtropical Storm Alberto was disrupting plans for Memorial Day barbecues and beach outings in Alabama, Florida and MS, as the storm continued churning north through the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. And, it said, heavy rains are also expected in many areas.

A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible for the area and time frame described.

Governors in Alabama and MS also declared states of emergency on Saturday.

Heavy downpours were expected to begin lashing parts of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Sunday.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management said in a news release Sunday that a mandatory evacuation has been issued in Franklin County for all barrier islands and for anyone living directly on the coastline, in mobile homes and in RV parks.

More than 5,000 were evacuated in Cuba over the raging subtropical storm Alberto, Sputnik reports. Some 3,000 people were evacuated in the central province of Sancti Spiritus because of the flooding threat, also near the Zaza Reservoir, which is overflowed because of the heavy rainfall, the EFE news agency reported.Meanwhile, about 2,000 people were reportedly evacuated in the province of Villa Clara.

"The main concern from Alberto is flooding; not so much along the immediate coast, but inland, from the heavy rains that are coming on top of over a week of rain across the southeast", said Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler at Enki Research in Savannah, Georgia.

Alberto is the first named storm of this year's hurricane season. The weather had scared off the usual crowds expected for the holiday weekend.

The storm now has maximum sustained winds of almost 50-miles-per-hour and is likely to become a tropical storm.

"It was a 50-50 chance of whether to come down and we chose to chance it", Gasper said. A storm's winds need to reach 74 miles per hour to be called a hurricane.

Even though South Florida is not in the projected path of Alberto, the region is on the east side - the wettest side - of the storm. Meteorologists are calling it a "subtropical storm", not to be confused with the just plain tropical storms we know and dread.
