Stars Wars: 20 Worst Franchise Moments (So Far)

Writer Jon Kasdan breaks down and explains that amazing and unexpected cameo in Solo

With Solo: A Star Wars Story getting lukewarm reviews-it's also been called a "so-so" flick-the latest film in the four-decade-old franchise isn't performing so well at the box office. Those projections were adjusted down on Friday to $105 million to $115 million. If it continues to underperform on Sunday, "Solo" could see it's three-day fall below the $80 million made by "Attack of the Clones" in 2002.

At the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story, we are shown a hologram communication by Darth Maul - the Sith apprentice who fell at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Has Hollywood hit Star Wars overload?

So, what does this mean for Star Wars going forward? After a normal Monday, the four-day total for "Justice League" sat at $101.3 million, and "Solo" might need the extra Memorial Day business just to match that amount.

Wallis Cinemas programming manager Sasha Close points to the release date, telling IF: "A week after Deadpool 2 is a big ask for any film, even one based on the most well-known and record-breaking franchise".

Overseas ticket sales are even lower. For me, marketing isn't the problem, sure the film has only had three months of marketing, but it's Star Wars.

A sub-$150 million opening, and the prospect of a box office total only slightly above that of 1980's The Empire Strikes Back and 1983's Return of the Jedi (without taking inflation into consideration) is certainly going to sting.

The Han Solo origin story, which stars Alden Ehrenrich in the titular role that Harrison Ford made famous in four previous Star Wars films, also had been besieged by bad press from the beginning of production.

"Rogue One" had its own drama, as director Gareth Edwards had to take a backseat to the more experienced helmer Tony Gilroy during the reshoots of the movie, and that went on to earn over $1 billion at the global box office. That figure represents a rather steep decline of 66 percent in its second frame, and brings its domestic total to $207.4 million after 10 days in theaters. The J.J. Abrams-directed Episode IX doesn't open in theaters until December 2019, which gives Lucasfilm time to recalibrate before announcing its next moves with the franchise. However, it wasn't enough to land the highest Memorial Day opening.

Other movies that opened over Memorial Day weekend and were DOA include "Tomorrowland" ($33 million opening weekend), "Alice Through the Looking Glass" ($26.8 million), and "X-Men: Apocalypse" ($65.7 million). Solo, which had the widest opening for a Star Wars movie yet, had a per-screen average attendance of only 2,100.
