Rouhani Congratulates Maduro on Re-Election as Venezuelan President

Election posters in the streets of Caracas Venezuela

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro announced Tuesday that he is expelling the top two US diplomats in the country in retaliation for USA sanctions put in place by the Trump administration after what US officials called a "sham" election.

"This is in protest, in defense of Venezuelan dignity!"

"We completely reject the false allegations that have been made by the Maduro regime against our two colleagues", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Tuesday following the expulsion announcement, but had no further reaction.

Maduro banned opposition candidates from running against him in the May 20 election, and "won" re-election against a handful of leftist candidates with what even official estimates show to be the lowest turnout in modern Venezuelan election history.

USA spokespeople claim that the measures are aimed at preventing a "firesale" of the country's assets by corrupt officials looking for kickbacks.

The US has been piling on punitive measures against the Venezuelan government while claiming to be looking out for the people of that Latin American country.

"I repudiate all the sanctions that are sought against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, because they harm it, they generate suffering for the people of Venezuela", said Maduro.

The United Nations has estimated that almost 1 million Venezuelans the country left between 2015 and 2017.

Maduro said in his speech that Robinson and Naranjo, whom he referred to as the head of the Central Intelligence Agency in Venezuela, both personally pressured several anti-government presidential aspirants not to compete in the race.

US-led worldwide sanctions on Venezuela have become the object of growing criticism over the past year, with UN Independent Human Rights Expert Alfred de Zayas calling the measures a "crime against humanity" and encouraging Caracas to take Washington to the global Court of Justice.

Maduro also appeared to be responding to escalating USA sanctions on Venezuela and being branded a "dictator" by the Trump administration.

The Trump administration announced it was blocking the Venezuelan government from selling off the nation's assets in exchange for cash.

But they appeared unlikely to heed the USA warnings. He said the two men would have 48 hours to depart the country.

"This money belongs to the Venezuelan people", Trump said. If Maduro presses forward, he warned, Venezuela will explode before his new six-year term is scheduled to begin in January.

The bloc of countries expressed its preoccupation for the rise in Venezuelans fleeing from their country, and announced that they would have a meeting in the first fortnight of June in order to discuss potential solutions.

For global pressures to work, they should be stepped up, taken in unison and be accompanied by greater unity of Venezuela's opposition parties and escalating protests on the streets.
