Pompeo Criticized Over Incorrect Use of NKorean Leader's Surname

Mike Pompeo calls North Korean leader 'Chairman Un' in diplomatic faux pas ahead of Pyongyang visit

North Korea has freed three American detainees, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday, May 9 hailing a diplomatic victory ahead of a planned summit with Kim Jong Un.

Pompeo's visit comes a day after Kim Jong Un made his second trip to China in less than two months, meeting President Xi Jinping and discussing the ongoing worldwide talks over North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes.

Trump said he will greet Pompeo and the Americans when they land at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington at 2 a.m. EDT (0600 GMT) Thursday morning.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says the three Americans "appear to be in good condition" and says they were "able to walk on the plane without assistance".

The U.S. has long demanded the release of Kim Dong-chul, Tony Kim and Kim Hak-song, the three American citizens who were imprisoned on charges of espionage or other anti-state activities against North Korea.

The meeting plan has been developed during weeks of talks that began after Trump suddenly announced on March 8 he had accepted Kim's invitation as delivered via the South Korean government.

The trip is Pompeo's second to North Korea this year.

As Pompeo returned to his Pyongyang hotel from a 90-minute meeting with Kim, the secretary of state crossed his fingers when asked by reporters if there was good news about the prisoners.

Kim Dong Chul, a South Korea-born pastor, was arrested in 2015 and accused of spying. "Everything is picked. And we look forward to having a very great success", he said.

Kim, a naturalized US citizen, was born in Jilin, China, one of the provinces that borders North Korea and is ethnically Korean.

The latest U.S. citizen released by North Korea, Otto Warmbier, came home in a coma in June and died days later.

In previous cases, detainees have been set free into the care of high-profile U.S. visitors, but there was no immediate indication they would be released after Pompeo held talks with Kim Yong Chul, director of the North's United Front department, one of the organisations handling relations with the South. Pompeo also traveled to Pyongyang to speak with Kim over the Easter weekend.

President Donald Trump ruled out the Korean Demilitarized Zone as the site of his upcoming talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, despite his earlier insistence it would provide a fitting backdrop.

Nauert said Pompeo also secured the release of three us citizens and is delighted to bring them home. The two others - Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim - were working at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology when they were detained about a year ago.

In this handout provided by The White House, CIA director Mike Pompeo (L) shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in this undated image in Pyongyang, North Korea. We also want to thank the president for engaging directly with North Korea.

The release of the prisoners is the latest move in a remarkable thaw in relations between the North Korea and the West that has seen Kim Jong Un promise to give up his nuclear programme. Kim, who graduated with a masters from the University of California, Riverside in 1990, works as a professor and has made several trips to North Korea to teach.

Warmbier was arrested by North Korean authorities in January 2016 for stealing a propaganda poster and sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor.

"This is not a result of sanctions that have been imposed from outside", Kim Yong Chol told Pompeo, contradicting the administration's line that Trump's "maximum pressure" approach had brought North Korea to the negotiating table.

"We must lead the ongoing momentum toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and achieve peace and stability in northeast Asia", Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said at a joint news conference in Tokyo after their trilateral summit. He said, however, that the US troop presence in South Korea would not be part of initial negotiations with North Korea.

The upbeat announcements on the North Korea front came just hours after it was revealed that Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen received, into a business account he controlled, $ 500,000 from a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin.
