Netanyahu calls Abbas 'anti-Semite' for saying Jews not persecuted for religion

European Union officials, including the organization's diplomats in Israel, have so far not commented publicly on Abbas' speech.

Abbas also accused Israeli corruption investigators for thwarting the peace process under Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who had offered a proposal for a near-total Israeli withdrawal from Judea, Samaria and Arab neighborhoods in eastern Jerusalem, and placing the Temple Mount under worldwide custodianship.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, appealed to the worldwide community to condemn Abbas's "severe anti-Semitism; the time has come for it to pass from the world".

According to Abbas, the mass genocide of more than 6 million Jews was a result of the Jews "social behavior, [charging] interest, and financial matters".

Abbas, who called his speech a "history lesson", also invoked an agreement whereby Hitler facilitated the immigration of Jews to Israel.

An editorial in The New York Times published Thursday described a speech given earlier this week by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's as "vile" and called on him to leave office.

This is why attempts to rewrite, downplay or deny it are risky.

The lengthy address bore frequent anti semitic references, conspiracy theories and tropes, including numerous attempts to undermine the 3,000 year-old Jewish history in the Land of Israel, and ignoring the fact that Israel is the only place where the Jews have ever enjoyed sovereignty.

"Such statements are unacceptable, deeply disturbing and do not serve the interests of the Palestinian people or peace in the Middle East", said a United Nations statement issued on Nickolay Mladenov's behalf.

The US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, said on Twitter that Abbas had "reached a new low in attributing the cause of massacres of Jewish people over the years to their "social behavior".

"Palestinians need a leader with energy, integrity and vision, one who might have a better chance of achieving Palestinian independence and enabling both peoples to live in peace".

The even-handed report charted Abbas' ascension into power as the likely successor to Yassir Arafat even since the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993, which another Palestinian leader Mustafa Barghouti told i24NEWS on Wednesday was "obsolete because Israel violated them, and stopped implementing them".

Abbas was born in 1935 in Safat, a town in the north of what was then British-ruled Palestine.

Abbas has faced accusations of Holocaust denial based on his 1982 doctoral dissertation titled "The Other Side: The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism".
