Jason Day Holds The Third Round Lead At Wells Fargo

From bad to worse: Tiger's putting ice cold

And at the Wells Fargo Championship on Saturday, he was reminded that he's still just a rookie.

Chuck Burton | AP Photo Jason Day reacts to his putt on the 15th hole during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club on Saturday. After a flat 2017 that was dulled by worries over his mother's health and a mild case of burnout after grinding to the top of the world, Day has returned with a renewed desire and focus this year.

And that may sound like more talk, but in truth, he really was playing like vintage Tiger Woods.

When he sputtered at the start, there was no reason to panic that he wasn't taking advantage of a great day for scoring.

Day struggled to get going but four birdies in six holes on the back nine saw him break free of the pack.

"My 61 was better", McIlroy said with a laugh.

Day finished with a daring play on the 18th. With his bare feet in the stream and the ball on the bank well above his feet, he hit a full shot to the back of the green for a two-putt par.

He was at 10-under 203. McIlroy three-putted the 18th and still shot 5 under. His only blemish on the back nine came at the final hole. So I've got to get up every morning and do everything I possibly can to get back to that ultimate goal of getting back to No. 1. "I'm super, super excited", Watney said.

"I definitely think it's just around the corner, it's not too far".

There's a small, handwritten note in the Quail Hollow clubhouse that points out the course record and the direction of the first tee.

Phil Mickelson shot a 64 to move up to 10th while Tiger Woods had a 68 at Quail Hollow to be tied for 31st at one under. "Got a tap-in birdie on nine and a good shot down the middle on 10".

McIlroy, at three-under 210, had four birdies in a row before also bogeying the last. "The score sort of flatters me", he said.

Apart from Woods, Rory McIlroy (68-76) made it to the weekend, though not by much. He was nine shots behind. By the time overnight leader Peter Malnati teed off he was already sharing the top spot with Uihlein.

Multiple hot streaks helped him overcome three bogeys, as he tallied birdies on Nos.

With his combination of power and the most statistically effective putting stroke on the PGA Tour this season, it's likely someone will have to chase down Day rather than have him back up.

Walking off the 18th green, Uihlein was probably looking at just two things. He had a pair of double bogeys, shot 75 and fell seven shots behind. Instead, he tried a flop shot and his wedge slid under the ball for a whiff.

Woods holed a 13-foot birdie putt on his final hole yesterday to guarantee that he'll stick around for the weekend at the Wells Fargo Championship.

"That was going to be a devastating hole", he said.

Day is in charge, but not in the clear.

Playing in just a handful of PGA Tour events past year, Uihlein qualified for the season-ending Web.com Tour Finals, won the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship and earned his PGA Tour card for the first time. Watney hasn't won in almost six years. The PGA Tour conducts random tests throughout the year at dozens of tournaments.

Uihlein is joined on 7-under alongside compatriots Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Wise, as well as England's Paul Casey. "I'm driving it better than I ever have before in my career".

"When I'm putting well, I don't feel like I should miss a putt inside 10 feet".
