Iowa Bans Abortion At 6 Weeks

Iowa set to ban abortions after six weeks

Republican Governor Kim Reynolds signed the "Heartbeat" bill, which severely restricts the practice of abortion in the midwest state.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, center, reacts after signing a six-week abortion ban bill into law during a ceremony in her formal office, Friday, May 4, 2018.

Iowa is the first state to ban abortion after the first sign of a fetal heartbeat. "Banning abortion before most women even know they're pregnant, this law will undoubtedly be challenged by the courts like other unconstitutional abortion bans before it", NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said in a statement provided to Refinery29.

The restriction is the strictest abortion regulation within the nation, the AP stated.

The Iowa abortion law does provide for exceptions in the case of rape, incest, and fetal abnormalities.

"It is time for the Supreme Court to weigh in on the issue of life", state Rep. Shannon Lundgren (R), the bill's floor manager, said. "But if death is determined when a heart stops beating, then doesn't a beating heart indicate life?"

Law makers in Iowa this week handed out the alleged "heart-beat expenses" which would prohibit abortion the moment a fetal heartbeat can be detected, or about throughout the week of maternity. The right to control your own entire body involves the right to acquire safe, legal abortion. "But I think many of us still never expected that Governor Reynolds would so swiftly jump to sign a bill that is so clearly unconstitutional".

"We created an opportunity to take a run at Roe v. Wade - 100 percent", said Republican state Senator Rick Bertrand of Sioux City, who said the legislation is designed to be "thrust into the court" that has become more conservative following President Donald Trump's appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch. "This is bigger than just a law".

This has led some pro-life activists to oppose heartbeat legislation on the premise that Roe v. Wade should not be directly challenged until the Supreme Court has a clear pro-life majority that would strike it down rather than reaffirm it. "I'm not going to back down from who I am or what I believe in". It's now in effect, though a provision requiring a three-day waiting period to get an abortion is tied up in a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood and the ACLU.

Reproductive rights advocates say the new potential bans also signal that conservative states are not afraid of being seen as extreme on abortion.

"We couldn't be more pleased", DeWitte said in a statement.
