Google Maps 'For You' Section, Augmented Reality Features Announced

Google I/O Update: Google Maps 'For You' Section, Augmented Reality Features Announced

Among the key features will be a personalized score indicating how much Google thinks you'll enjoy a restaurant or bar (at least on the surface, comparable to Netflix's percentage telling you how much you might like a movie).

To help provide for these changing needs, the Google Maps team have worked to integrate Google Maps with the smartphone camera.

The "For you" tab will make suggestions about places to visit based on information Google has about you, and you can "follow" suggestions to reference them later.

Recommendations for top trending activities, which are centralized around the area you're now looking at in Maps.

Google Maps wasn't forgotten at the search giant's big developer conference this year.

The new "For you" tab is the best way to stay on top of the latest and greatest happening in the areas you're into. They will also be able to get help with directions from a nifty fox.

Google Maps is also getting augmented reality support that will mix the traditional Street View interface of the mapping service with a live camera view. This way it would be harder to misinterpret the directions the app is giving users because every turn they make will be guided by AR navigation signs and symbols.

Are you the kind of person that gets lost, even when using Google Maps? We'll find out for sure when both of the new features roll out globally to Android (and iOS) devices, which Google says will happen in the coming months. Another Google Maps feature called "Your Match" will suggest restaurants and other venues that are specifically catered to the end-user through the power of machine learning. This is particularly evident with a new "Your match" score that lets users see why such and such a place was recommend.

It will also be easier to create and share lists in Maps, so you can come up with some ideas and share them with friends and family and - assuming the group has similar or comparable tastes - vote on what to do and where to go.
