Federal Bureau of Investigation suspects former Central Intelligence Agency employee of leaking trove of hacking tools

Former CIA engineer, 29, facing a child pornography charge is also suspected of leaking devastating secret agency documents to Wikileaks

It was one of the most significant leaks in the CIA's history, exposing secret cyberweapons and spying techniques that might be used against the United States, according to current and former intelligence officials.

At the time WikiLeaks was posting stolen secret documents about the CIA's hacking operations, including software exploits created to take over iPhones and turn smart TVs into surveillance devices.

Prosecutors said in court last week that they plan to file a new indictment in the next 45 days. According to Schulte's LinkedIn page, he also worked for the US National Security Agency as a system engineer, prior to his time at the CIA.

The Post reports that federal prosecutors obtained a search warrant previous year for personal computers and hand-written notes from Schulte's apartment, but that investigators didn't find any evidence linking Schulte to the disclosure. Court papers suggest he was aware of encrypted images of children existing on the server. What's on the public record now is that Schulte uses Tor, anonymity software used by millions of people, and that he planned to leave the country previous year - a trip he says was for a family vacation to Cancun.

He was then tossed back in jail in December after prosecutors found evidence that he had broken those rules, and he has been held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan since then, according to the paper's report.

Schulte has actually been in jail since being indicted for possession of child pornography last September.

According to the former Central Intelligence Agency engineer he had been planning a trip to Mexico with his brother around the time his apartment was searched, which may have given the appearance that he was trying to flee the country. The former prosecutor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an open investigation, also said that if government lawyers acknowledged in a public hearing that Schulte was a target, they probably suspect he acted alone.

He also said that because of 'unfortunate circumstances the Federal Bureau of Investigation ultimately made the snap judgement that (he) was guilty of the leaks and targeted (him)'.

The New York Times reported a prime suspect had already been identified by USA authorities.

It's unclear why Schulte has not been charged or cleared in the breach. Otherwise he is just languishing'.

Joshua Adam Schulte, who worked for a CIA group that designs computer code to spy on foreign adversaries, is believed to have provided the agency's top-secret information to WikiLeaks, federal prosecutors acknowledged in a hearing in January.
