Facebook wants to help you find love

Facebook is taking on Tinder and the internet is saying 'swipe left.'

Match's Chief Executive Officer Mandy Ginsberg took a swipe at Facebook in an email statement, saying it was flattering that Facebook wanted to enter the dating app market, however, they were surprised that the social media giant would do so now, considering the amount of sensitive and personal data involved in the dating business. It is no coincidence that Tuesday's prototype profile was aged 36, or that Zuckerberg promised that "this is going to be for building real, long-term relationships". This grants the apps access to select Facebook data, which helps to speed up the process of creating dating profiles.

Aside from matching, users of the upcoming Facebook Dating service will also have a chance to meet with other people via Groups or Events.

The Facebook Dating app, armed with its own set of features, including a separate messenger, could amplify the problems that now plague Facebook. It is going to be opt-in only and users would be able to create their profiles without their Facebook friends getting to know.

This comes after the 33-year-old testified before Congress last month for about 10 hours over two days.

Facebook has had a number of high-profile scandals rock user trust in the platform in recent months, including revelations of Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election and Cambridge Analytica improperly obtaining the data of up to 87 million Facebook users.

Zuckerberg says if Facebook is focused on helping people build meaningful relationships, "then this is perhaps the most meaningful of all". Facebook has not revealed when the service will be available.

Facebook isn't assured success in the dating game despite its stable of over 2 billion users.

According to the announcement, this new feature would allow people who are not friends on Facebook to connect.

Carter's profile on LinkedIn describes him as a data science manager, "helping Facebook get even better at making meaningful and beneficial connections between people and communities".

"Your Facebook won't be as good while it relearns your preferences", Zuckerberg said. Dipping into online dating is a unusual follow-up to a massive data leak, "given the amount of personal and sensitive data that comes with this territory", she said.

Given the proliferation of free dating platforms in the past decade - a third of 18 to 29-year-olds in the USA now use an online dating service - many considered it only a matter of time before Facebook bought into the $3 billion industry.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday announced a new privacy control called "Clear History".

The Facebook founder also spoke about the company's wider plans to introduce new tools to find and remove malicious content and accounts, as it looked to "protect election integrity" as well as data privacy among users.

Grindr launched in 2009 and is the most popular dating app among gay men in the world.

Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) made a number of interesting announcements at its recent annual developers conference, but one of them seemed to raise more eyebrows than any of the others. Such information is often collected when a user signs in to an outside site or app using their Facebook login.

We will have to wait for the service to be officially launched to see how well it fares.
