Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Announces New Go Store Locations

Cashier-less store coming to Illinois

The company has announced that two more Amazon Go stores are coming to major cities before the year is through.

Will Amazon Go stores breathe new life into the traditional brick and mortar concept? Now, it has posted listings for store managers in San Francisco and Chicago, according to The Seattle Times. In February, real-estate tracker Curbed took note of a building permit for construction of a 625-square-foot Amazon store in Chicago's Loop district.

Opening more stores is yet another sign that Amazon is serious about expanding its physical presence. Los Angeles and San Francisco are the top two cities that are great to live in if you love Amazon.

The actual Amazon Go store is extremely tech-heavy, was expensive to build and can only sell a narrow range of specially-selected items - nowhere near the 50,000 or so items a typical supermarket stocks.

The retailer has been billing it as the first cashierless convenience store in the world.

Amazon executives had hinted during the January opening of the pilot store on the company's Seattle headquarters campus that they planned to expand, but the company had been silent on its road map.

Customers, who need to have Amazon's Go smartphone app, swipe their phone on the way into the store. Amazon's technology, including overhead cameras, keeps track of what they buy and charges customers after they leave. In addition to its own selection of food available for purchase online and the Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service, Amazon owns Whole Foods.

Staff won't include cashiers, but plenty of human employees will be needed to restock shelves, check ID for wine and work as extra security.
